The Encyclopaedia Africana Project
The Encyclopaedia Africana Project stands as one of the most ambitious intellectual undertakings in Africa’s history, a bold effort to document, preserve, and share the stories, achievements, and lived experiences of African people across the continent and the global diaspora.
Originally conceived as a response to centuries of misrepresentation and underdocumentation, the project seeks to provide a comprehensive, authoritative, and African-centered body of knowledge. It is more than an encyclopaedia, it is a cultural archive, an academic resource, and a foundation for future generations to understand Africa through its own voice.
At Rankdigital, we see this initiative not only as a historical milestone but as a transformative opportunity to redefine how knowledge about Africa is created, accessed, and experienced in the digital age
Project Background
The Encyclopaedia Africana Project was originally conceived by W. E. B. Du Bois and later championed by Kwame Nkrumah in 1962. Its mission was bold and transformative:
To document the authentic history, culture, and contributions of Africa and its diaspora, from an African perspective.
At a time when global narratives about Africa were largely shaped by colonial viewpoints, the project sought to reclaim authorship, placing Africa at the center of its own story.
Today, the project continues under the African Union as a flagship initiative, producing peer-reviewed scholarly content and expanding its reach through digital platforms.
